I had the best time in McAllen, Texas. No, it had nothing to do with making money...luckily, since we rarely make enough to make our expenses. It had everything to do with the folks that we met there. The way they welcomed us, you would have thought we were celebrities. I started to let it go to my head then I discovered they were just awesome folks and treated everyone beautifully. So, with my ego back in check, I just simply enjoyed being there. Now Brandy and I are back in the car and heading home where we have two days to get things ready for another show in Monroe, Louisiana. That show lasts until Sunday and then we leave around five a.m. Monday for our flight to Puyallup, Washington. Who set up this schedule, I keep asking myself. Then, I remember, it was I. Massive DUH.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12046301909033836918noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8119896657788363048.post-41711889171939348862014-02-12T11:30:00.000-06:002014-02-13T08:36:35.688-06:00Certifiable....For some reason that word, "certifiable" keeps popping up in my head. Go figure... After driving to California, then on to Phoenix, then home to spend exactly one night, I drove six hours down South and gave the two lectures in Hammond last Thursday, packing the car afterwards while it was sleeting. Yes, I said sleeting in south Louisiana. I don't need two hands to count the last time I am aware of that happening....shoot, I don't need two fingers!

Then, I enlisted every family member in the house to cut, assemble, label, and pack for our next show. We had three days to get a month's worth of work done. We were scheduled to leave early Tuesday. Monday night around 9, my son informs me that schools and businesses are closing for the next two days due to the ice storm that is predicted to begin around midnight. Now, just because we live in the northern part of the state, don't think I need all five of those fingers to count the occurrences of this here, either. We are still in Louisiana, folks. So, we threw what we had done in the car and headed out around midnight. Of course, it was already icy and sleeting. Remember that little certifiable thingie?

The following day (yesterday) we drove south, again. This time we are heading as far as San Antonio, Texas. You guessed it, sleeting and raining the entire trip. What-the-what is going on? Today, we are driving even further south, like five hours further South. If it starts sleeting this time, I am not just going to be thinking certifiable, I am going to be thinking friggin' jinxed. Wish us luck.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12046301909033836918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8119896657788363048.post-47817072875858625162014-02-05T23:41:00.000-06:002014-02-05T23:41:26.566-06:00Change of PlanWow, I decided that when I went to Alexander Henry fabrics I was going to limit myself to 4, o.k., maybe five bolts of fabric. Four hours later, I see AH, my bank balance, and the teensy weeny bit of fabric I did not buy in my rear view mirror. Sixteen bolts! I am not only crrrrazy, I am nearly broke. Easy come? Hardly. Easy go? Absolutely.

I hate halfway done jobs, so Brandy and I decided we had to finish cleaning (out our wallets, gulp). We headed south to the Brighton outlet and blew the rest of our wad. Finally, we depart for Santa Fe. We ended up spending the night in the most delightful town, Wickenburg, Arizona.

Around 7 a.m. the next day, as we are gassing up for the long drive to Don's house in New Mexico, we get a call from the folks running the quilt show in Phoenix. REGROUP. We spent the next hour on the side of the road, madly making phone calls. Then, we drove down to Phoenix and unloaded right into the show. Everyone was so delightful, so thoughtful. I should mention here that both the California and Phoenix shows had amazing set-up situations...no one was sitting there timing us , tapping their respective feet, hovering, waiting for is to move our car. I loved that. We will be back!!

We arrived home late last night and washed a couple of loads of clothes only to repack so I could head to south Louisiana to do a lecture on quilts to some college students. After that is done, I head back home. Nothing to do but sit around....hmmmm, do you really believe that? If so, call me for some great land I have to sell.....Oh wait, I honestly do have some land to sell. So, call whether you believe me or not........
It not only shows what an amazingly talented writer he is but how beautiful a person he is....how very lucky and proud I am to share my life with him. I have read it and re- read it so many times that I almost have it memorized. This was written in honor of our sister, Deb, a.k.a, Lee, who died in an accident.
"The dawn sky is a grey blanket so close that you feel like you could touch it if you were only a bit taller and could jump like Michael Jordan wearing brand new basketball shoes. It's my favorite time of the day when normally I can see the pink-splashed clouds melt away as the sun rises and paints Sun and Moon mountains with details not seen in the dark, but today there is no sunrise, and the colors are gone. And i realize that (I think) this is Deb's birthday. And this morning seems to reflect the loss of color and magic that she always brought into each of our lives. Sometimes, like this morning, the space between my eyes fills with a longing to reach out to her to give her a piece of my heart that I never had the courage, thoughtfulness, or sensitivity to give her; that comfort that says simply and forever that I love you without reservation. So in the hope that she might feel it and that you might feel it too, I don't want to let this dawning moment pass without telling you, and her, that I do love you without reservation.

Happy Birthday Deb.... I mean, right off the proverbial bat, here I am skipping several days of writing. Our typical day while here: get up at five in the morning, leave the house by 6. We brace ourselves before we join the rest of L.A. on "The 5,"as they say here in sunny California, (remembering why I never want to live in any city that has this kind of traffic) and, with luck, arrive in Ontario about an hour later. We straighten the booth from the previous day and stand on our feet all day, trying to squeeze in potting and a bite to eat. At the end of the day, we "yo yo" to my cousin's home, back where we started our day. We are greeted with absolutely amazing hospitality and food, hoping to not rudely fall asleep, face first in our plate of food, and then we hit the sack, barely getting in Jammie's first before heading into LaLa land. The next day is a do over of the previous one ending with the last day of the show on Sunday. Somehow, I just could not find the time to write. Funny thing is, I love this Gypsy life.

Now just in case my day has not made you green with envy, I will now guarantee that by letting you know that I am now heading to the Alexander Henry warehouse to do my own envying over their environment. Talk about a completely awesome workplace...not to mention totally drool worthy fabrics. Please do your best to have a grrrreat day even though you are not here, too.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12046301909033836918noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8119896657788363048.post-79511939165889676602014-01-20T22:08:00.001-06:002014-01-20T22:08:27.469-06:00Beauty Parlor DayTalk about a misnomer....I mean "beauty" anything at this stage in my life has very little to do with reality, at least as far as anywhere on my body is concerned. One can only hope but I am always thinking more in terms of a miracle.

My cousin Chris is a hair dresser and today she had to put all of her talents to the test. Both Brandy and I were in desperate need of her skills. Did I detect a tear in Chris' eye?
It started out beautifully. The day was gorgeous. We shared a lovely breakfast with our generous friends and some precious hummingbirds while sitting under an orange tree laden with huge oranges. It pretty much went downhill from there. "The Plan" was to find every quilt shop we could in Phoenix and give them the gift of their lives...the opportunity to purchase some original fabric by Dianne Kay Emery Springer. How could anyone in their right mind turn that down?

LOTS of them. Shockingly, only one shop even invited us to visit them and they acted so bored that I wanted to say, "Hey, have you any idea how lucky you are to even be in the same room as this lovely fabric?" Seriously, I am starting to think that I am alone in my thinking. Oh well, let's head to California and see if I can get others to join you and me in my world.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12046301909033836918noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8119896657788363048.post-6207135252949278292014-01-18T09:53:00.002-06:002014-01-18T09:53:49.898-06:00I am a Bad Bad GirlI started getting a white streak in my hair when I was ten years old....now, I am completely white-headed. I used to think it was simply that, my turning white-headed. Now, I think it was symbolic of my gradual training as a guilt-ridden slacker...first just a small streak, now, I am one big blob of guilt. One prime example? My guilt over having neglected my Threads. Another example? My guilt over causing any undeserved worry to those completely awesome, beautiful readers, particularly Barbara and Gale.

Saying I do not deserve you guys is putting it mildly. I promise to do my best to earn the honor of calling you my BFF's.

I would like to say that life has gotten in the way of my writing but that is pretty simplistic. Of course, it is not a lie, it just would not be "..the truth, the whole truth, so help me, God." In part, I think it was depression which I did not think anyone deserved to share, in part, laziness, because I put my soul and my energy into my writing (wow, that is a scary thought, isn't it?). So, my original thought was to just put off writing for one day. That, obviously, turned into months.

So, again, I apologize for causing worry, or concern. I only want to cause smiling!

So, for this new beginning, I will just let you know that Brandy and I are on our way to vend at Road to California. We are staying with friends in Phoenix. I can hear them in the other room and I can smell breakfast. So, I am going to wake up my sleepy-headed daughter and try to prevent any guilt over making breakfast get cold. I hate feeling guilty. Anyone think it would help if I dyed this head of white hair???
At least I am one where my own home, my own bed is concerned. I should include my blog in that, too. Strange, or, not, it feels great to be here. Sleeping in my own bed, finding my pottie in the night, hearing snoring next to me....Heavenly. O.k., so the snoring is not so Heavenly, or so strange-- Brandy helps out in that department most of the time. Just having Tom next to me is about as perfect as it gets.

I spent most of yesterday with a power tool in my hand. Get your mind out of the bedroom, it was a Leaf Blower, my friends. Remember, Tom was home when I got here. The yard was sooo neglected. Brandy and I even got up on the roof and cleaned the gutters. Now, I feel like I was run over by a truck!

Guess what I discovered while we were in Vegas? Anyone remember I mentioned ages ago that I was working on fabric designs for a sewing machine company's new luggage? Well, that luggage was introduced at convention that same week we were at Las Vegas. The "secret" company is Baby Lock and I am so honored and pleased. As soon as I can figure out how to get images off my email, I will post hem.

Thanks for the unbelievable support.
Chaos to others is, in my world, the order of business. I call it Organized Chaos but I seem to be the only one on the planet who would think there was any organization to this at all. What they do not see is into my brain. (I think they need new glasses) My brain looks just like my order of business and, it makes perfect sense to me. They want busy...I am busy. At any given time I have at least 10 things in the works. My daughter throws her hands up in despair because my "Plan" is so-o-o-o-o not how she operates. What baffles her is that I manage to get all 10 things done, on time, and often, ahead of time. She spends so much of her time rolling her eyes at me that I occasionally forget she has pupils.

One thing that causes her stress is my tendency to stop working on a project that just HAS to get done and start a project that has nothing to do with what she considers "important, a.k.a., On-The-List." Of course, she is right, but, that is my business, heh heh.

Check out my latest Not-On-The-List project. New kitchen rugs. One teensy weensy concern. I forgot to see if this fabric is washable. Not the best idea for kitchen rugs, gulp.
Brandy and I drove allllll the way to Birmingham to pick Mother and Gene's blueberries as we have done for the last several years. I promised everyone I knew that I would be bringing them a container of berries. Well, we will be eating my words, not blueberries. We waited about 2 weeks too late to reap nature's bounty. The ground was covered with berries. Our basket was basically empty. Oh well, we had a lovely visit with our friends Thad and Liz. They are such a lovely couple, and such an in-love couple that even when they are in different rooms, you can feel the connection between the two of them.
So, folks, I am sending my vibes out so you, too, can FEEL the LUV. I have been searching for this image on my blog all morning long. Perhaps I only posted it in my dreams. If you think you already saw it, you might just have been in my dream, too. Welcome to my world....and welcome to deja vu???? Whatever, this is my latest, bestest, newest chair. It has actually been around for several months in my booth even if it did not make it as a Thread. Well, not if it is yucky. Yucky ones have the potential to make me cry. The good thing is that so far, I have never gotten a Yucky comment. I did get a Yucky email a few days ago. One gal went to my website and apparently either ordered or considered ordering one of my Quilt in a Cup kits. She yelled (as much as one can yell in an email) at me saying how dare I ask $24 for a Quilt in a Cup kit when it does not even come with fabric. She said that she would never ever order from me and would spread the word to everyone she knew to do the same. Interestingly, when I offered to give her money back I never heard back from her. Dang, my dream of make everyone happy just got busted....

O.K., back to the Feedback Thingie, I have my Kleenex ready because I have decided to send a free pattern or applique (it's a surprise) to everyone who comments on my blog this month. (I will say that, because I am a girl, I can change my mind about giving mean people a reward. My prerogative) You will be limited to one pattern per week, but, whoever comments the most times in July, will earn an extra free pattern. When you post a comment, send an email to me (sales@quiltinacup.com) so I can send you a copy of a pattern to download (or, a hard copy if you prefer) If there is a tie, there will be a drawing. If this works out nicely, I may just continue this until I run out of different patterns to send. I better get busy.....

By the way, you can make a comment on any of my Threads, not just the most current one. It just has to be a new comment and you have to let me know which one. Hope you have fun.... I have always thought that I had an addictive personality and was so grateful that I did not smoke, drink, or do drugs. I would have been one of the ones who not only do not stop, they do not want to stop, ever.

I am addicted to doing, in general. The BEST is Doing-two-things-at-once. Take driving...how boring that has the potential to be. Not for me. I take projects (notice
the plural?) with me to work in the car. The invention of cell phones
was done with me in mind so I could do two things at once, love driving and talking. Thank you, Apple.... I actually overcame being carsick by teaching myself to do needlepoint in the car. Relax---it was while my husband was driving. Anyway, I have finished a number of quilts, knitted several sweaters, cross-stitched my way across America......all because I love "doing" who I love while in the car...(that might not be a typo, heh heh..................)

Years ago, I discovered ebay. By the end of the first day, I had won over $800 worth of stuff. It was so much fun. And expensive. I discovered there was no "Department for Bidding" in Alcoholics Anonymous for me to call. So, I went cold turkey. It is so hot here in Louisiana, no one noticed the withdrawal sweats.

Then, I found casinos. Luckily I have to drive to get to one so I can really get some stuff done before I hock the house. Seriously, this is was-a-a-a-y too much fun to be legal. I am not ready to look up AA for this one but I am thinking I might be psychic because I see a need for withdrawal in my future, gulp.

Now, guess what I discovered?? Quibid. Talk about dangerous. No driving. No leaving the house. No having to get dressed. And, if you "win? buy?" something for less than 50 cents, it is not only free, it is free shipping. Talk about addictive....at least if you check it out, be sure to put me in the "Reffered by" section so I can pretend I am making money on this addiction.

My husband said, initially he was hoping I would get an addiction to.....well, he stopped mid thought and realized that this could have led to many more children and that had the potential for being even more expensive than casinos. Better leave well enough alone.........

Yippeeeee. Tom is home for a four day weekend. He is so good at welcoming me home that I had to live up to his...um...welcoming home skills? I think I did O.K.

Today, we are off to see "The Lone Ranger." Not only does it look like a cute movie, it has Johnny Depp in it. Win Win Win. LOVE Johnny Depp.

This has the beginnings of a LOVEly weekend, don'tcha think???? The fabric is being printed as we speak. Looking forward to the first cuttage (is that a word??) pieces from the production so I can put it in my booths as temptation, heh heh. Now, to find that list of all those sweeties who pre-ordered. Jeez, I am so lucky that my head is connected.....Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12046301909033836918noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8119896657788363048.post-8164241519077511282013-07-02T13:15:00.000-05:002013-07-02T13:15:07.720-05:00Sewing and Scratching and SkepticsWhew, I am sewing like a crazy person....hmm, perhaps that is more appropriate that I realized. Anyway, we finally are sleeping in our own beds. Of course, I am having a difficult time finding the bathroom. Shouldn't there be some standard placement for toilets? I mean, it would be so much easier to adjust moving from one hotel to the other, one hotel to home, if the bathrooms were always to the right of the bed....or to the left.... or....whatever. I mean, it gets very close to "puddle" sometimes...TMI????????

I had one day between trips so I took the time to do some yard work. Need I say, desperately needed yard work? The yard punished me by sharing its "stash." Yard stash came in the form of poison ivy, wasp stings, and horsefly biting. I have been itching to the point of bruising and bleeding for almost two weeks. I called my son who is trained in Asian medicine and asked him to please put together some of his magic potions. This worked out nicely since we were heading immediately down to Houston to see him and his lovely bride. Little by little my skepticism is dwindling on this method of medicine. My preset mindset of "Skeptic" is putting it gently. Shame on me. Within less than 24 hours of taking the first dose, my poison ivy was drying up. Normally, I have this scratching/itching/insanity for weeks and weeks. It's a miracle! Apologies are definitely in order. I feel a new religion coming and I can see some door-knocking-preaching-to-the-masses in my future.

One of the other interesting things that we did while in Houston was visit a psychic. Several words come to mind here, as well, and, again, Skeptic was high on the list. Whatever my beliefs, it was interesting to say the least. The psychic was the most lovely of men, gentle, and sincere. Without knowing us at all, he described my mother to a T. He talked, first, to Brandy, addressing many of her issues. Then, suddenly, he began to write, frantically, and when we asked what was happening he said it was my sister talking. We said, "To whom?" He pointed to me. When he stopped writing, this is what he had written:

Dianne, my darling girl - you have done such a fine job with your own life, and
your family. I suppose I could hunt around for something to improve on, but I wouldn't
have you change a thing.

You sparkle as you walk, and you leave behind you a trail of stars and dusty light,
ever so easy for me to see, no matter where I go. Thank you for that, for we can always
see you, and so I always know where you are. I am so glad you are having so much fun
now. It's your time.

Now you know, I wanted to work with you. But, in the end, I guess I really didn't.
Pink dress...Remember that pink dress? You looked better in it than I did, but I still would
have liked to wear it. Your whole life has been a pretty, pink dress, and I hope you know
how lucky you are this time around. I know it. I've always known it. And I love you for it.

What else can I add other than perhaps miracles do happen.......

What was amazing was that my sewing machine and projects somehow snuck into my car. So, I was only partially in my Fantasy Land. As Brandy and I were driving South, I checked the weather for Fort Morgan....rain was predicted for the entire time we were planning to be there.

To our delight, reality did live up to some of my expectations. It was sunny every single day. Part "B" of my expectations was that I would come back lighter than when I left. Hrumph. The only thing lighter was my wallet. I actually gained 3 pounds! Pew. Stinky stinky pew.

I have been looking for you for a month and.....oh, wait....it is I who have been gone. Oopsy.

It has been a zoo around here. I know, you are asking yourselves, "Is that something NEW???" Oopsy.

There really is no excuse that will stand up in a court of logic. It is simply that I have not stopped long enough to talk. Oh, I have been "talking," just not where you guys could hear. I have been talking to B.....about the sewing machine luggage that has my fabric on it ( MAJOR EGO TRIP so it is a good thing that I will have the new luggage to pack my new, larger hats in to fit my newly larger head) , I have been talking, a lot, to the printer about my fabric that I had hoped would already be in my hands, I have been talking to ....well, myself, mostly. Creating requires a lot of conversation with oneself, particularly when oneself does not always know what oneself is talking about. I tend to babble more then but I don't have to worry because I am the only one in the conversation, heh, heh.

And now, you are conversing with yourself asking, "This is what you have been waiting for for a month?!?!
Is making a quilt working? When people get paid to sing, is that working???? So much for deep thought.

I have been busy (working) on samples for Market in Portland. Thus, I am going to do my best to (see? I have stopped promising) to post the completed items. So....(the top image is the closest to the "real" colors. The other images look faded to me. IPhones are probably not the best choice for images, heh heh)
There are actually those of you who are so loyal, so amazingly faithful to me that you are kind enough to check in on me even when I have been very very bad.....beyond neglectful. I don't deserve any of you. Consider yourselves hugged.....heck, just go and give yourself a big fat kiss from me, too. I am nothing if not generous....

The show in Paducah was grrrrreat. We were placed in a new spot this year. Even though we were way over in a corner at the very back of the building, we managed to set a personal best as far as sales are concerned. The folks were delightful from the AQS personnel, to the shoppers, to the fellow vendors, to the sweet young fireman/EMT who came to ou booth to drool over my daughter.

As you can see from the hour that I am writing this, I should be heading to bed. So, more later, I just hope it is sooner rather than too much later. Again, kiss kiss.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12046301909033836918noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8119896657788363048.post-74953821564769795762013-04-18T17:21:00.001-05:002013-04-18T17:21:05.344-05:00Quilter Lovin' ItTruthfully, I love a lot of things. That can be a problem, especially when it comes to clothes, food, fabric, quilting, jewelry, shopping, painting, do-nuts, slot machines ....you get the idea. Right now, I am in love with the weather. That is a rare statement coming from someone who lives in northern Lose-iana. The usual weather is hot, or humid, or hot and humid. These last few weeks? GORGEOUS. Dogwoods are in full bloom, even ones that do not usually have blooms. Azaleas, just WOW. Roses, AMAZING. Now, lucky me, I get to prolong this time of year by heading North.

Good news, I hope I hope I hope. My strike-offs are in the U.S. Sadly, that does not mean it is in my hands at this second. I have to wait a few more days because it will be waiting for me in Paducah. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12046301909033836918noreply@blogger.com0
